In 1994 a single UAS for Western Switzerland was created. Few years forward, The Ordinance for the creation and management of the Universities of Applied Sciences specifies degree courses with the approved qualifications and the measures relating to professional development, applied research, and development, which leads to the creation of HES-SO and HES-S2. In 2004 SO and S2 merged and Engineering Sciences and Architecture, Management and Services, Business, Social Work, Design and Health, are brought together under the label of HES-SO. By 2007 HES-SO launched eight new Master programs and continued to launch more in the upcoming years.

HES-SO provides a practice-oriented education that is a continuation of basic professional training. It carries out applied research and development projects in both creative and innovative ways, integrating them into its teaching. It also seeks to ensure economic, social, ecological, cultural, and environmental sustainability while taking into consideration the bilingualism of the cantons. HES-SO has a lot of collaboration with other educational and research institutions in Switzerland and abroad bringing the students many opportunities nationally and internationally.

The HES-SO aspires to develop the best practices of scientific research. To inform and support the community, it is committed to developing the highest quality standards, in general, and in particular for research. Established in the six fields of study and organized within 66 institutes and laboratories, applied research, development, creation, and innovation combine disciplinary and interdisciplinary perspectives, theory, and practice. All of this anchoring in practice and anticipating societal challenges. Funded by competitive national and international donors or private and public mandates, the projects are primarily co-constructed with professionals or beneficiaries (citizen science) and are firmly practical-oriented.

Services & Facilities

HES-SO has multiple libraries that support students for studies and scientific research. Libraries are both service platforms and documentation centers dedicated to professional and scientific information. The majority of the libraries belong to one of the two main networks of Swiss science libraries, allowing access to documentary resources through the two networks: RenouVaud and swisscovery. The libraries offer training and advice in various information skills: bibliographic referencing, documentary research, research data, open access, etc.

In 2019, the Swiss Accreditation Council (CSA) granted institutional accreditation to the HES-SO, thus recognizing its capacity to ensure and develop itself the quality of its teaching, research, and services. on duty. The accreditation underlines the institutional maturity of the HES-SO, which in the same year celebrated its twentieth anniversary.
