Qualifying for a grant
- This is your first course of study.
- You are registered at the University of Zurich.
- Your parents’ taxable income is not higher than CHF 86,000.– and their taxable assets are not above CHF 300,000.–.
- You have exhausted all other sources of financial aid including parents, your own income, and cantonal grants.
- You have already applied for aid in your parents’ canton of residence. Students from Germany have submitted a BAföG application for abroad.
- You can prove good academic achievement at the University of Zurich within a reasonable period of time.
- You will finish your studies before turning 45.
- International students who are studying at UZH to obtain their master’s degree can only be financially supported by us if they have obtained their bachelor’s degree at a Swiss Institute of Higher Learning. The amount increases by CHF 6,000.– for each additional child.
Qualifying for a loan
- You are registered at the University of Zurich.
- You have exhausted all other sources of financial aid including parents, your own income, and cantonal grants.
- You have only four or less semesters left to study.
- You must submit a notarized guaranty. This can also be handed in when signing the contract.
- You must be a Swiss citizen or have a C EC/EFTA residency permit.
- You must finish your studies before turning 45.
Proving a case of hardship
- You are, for no fault of your own, currently in financial straights.
- You can realistically pay your debts within 6 months. Short-term credits serve to overcome temporary difficulties (for example, if you are waiting for your grant) and not to pay off debt. Debt collection will be enforced if payment is not punctual.

The expected minimum cost of living for students at the University of Zurich, therefore, comes to a total of CHF 2000 per month.
