In 1969, EPFL got separated from the University of Lausanne to become a Federal Institution. From 1,400 students in the same year, EPFL has grown rapidly with around 12,000 students and 4,000 professors and collaborators in the present years. The institution has two official languages, French and English.

EPFL’s mission remains to train new engineers, scientists, and architects, by offering students and faculty an innovatively equipped environment. Because of the EPFL’s philosophy of learning by doing, many of their degree programs place emphasis on lab sessions and hands-on workshops with direct research applications. Giving students solid technical skills combined with a sound basis in computational thinking, but also encouraging them to develop their imagination, creativity, and entrepreneurial spirit through cross-disciplinary projects is EPFL’s methodology.

There are over 350 laboratories and research groups at EPFL, dedicated to contributing to science and technology and aiming to improve the world we live in. Across its several campuses, EPFL has a diverse, committed, and stimulating research community that is active over a wide spectrum of quantitative and design-focused disciplines. To foster trans-disciplinary research they launch strategic initiatives such as the Blue Brain Project, the Swiss Plasma Centre, or the Venice Time Machine.

EPFL is a Recognized or Accredited Swiss Higher Education Institution in accordance with the Federal Higher Education Act, HEdA.
