The University of Zurich (UZH) is Switzerland’s largest university with 28,000 enrolled students. It is made of seven faculties covering 100 various subject areas and offers a wide variety of Bachelor’s, Master’s, and P.h.D programs.

In 1833 the Canton of Zurich combined all its existing colleges of theology, jurisprudence, and medicine to create the “Universitas Turicensis” and supplemented these three areas of study within a faculty of arts. UZH was the first European university to be founded by a democratic state rather than by a monarchy or the Church. In the first year, it had 161 students and 55 instructors. A hundred years later in the 1933 University of Zurich counted 2,033 students, whereas now it rose up to 28,000.


The University of Zurich is composed of seven faculties with numerous study programs offered at bachelor’s, master’s, and P.h.D level.

The University of Zurich is the leading house at three National Centres of Competence in Research and is a partner in numerous ones. It is also a member of the League of European Research Universities. The Clinical Research Priority Programs are a part of the University’s efforts to promote strategic areas of research in University Medicine and to support junior scholars. Researchers at the University of Zurich have access to state-of-the-art technology platforms and highly qualified personnel.


Student Affairs and Advisory Services

The Student Advisory Services is students’ first port of call for questions about choosing their studies. They support matriculated students who are thinking about changing their subject or who have general (not subject or faculty-related) questions about studying at UZH. Prospective students can find the most important information on choosing a field of study as well as the contact information for other advisory centers.

Psychological Counseling Services

The psychological and counseling services office is available for any student going through difficult phases in their life, troubles in their studies, or conflicts arising during the course of doctoral study. They’re devoted to offering effective support even in acute crisis. The counseling services are available to all students and PhD candidates at UZH and ETH Zurich. The sessions are confidential and free of charge. The staff speaks German, English, French, Dutch, and Polish.

IT Service Desk

The Information Technology Office team assists students with their daily IT needs to enable them to focus on their studies. Services offered include:

  • Passwords and UZH account,
  • Workspace and collaboration,
  • Software and e-learning,
  • Studies and organization,
  • IT security,
  • IT courses and training.


There are numerous libraries providing resources for UZH students. They are regulated and supported by two committees established by the Executive Board of the University: The Library Commission makes strategic decisions and users are represented by the Library Coordinating Board. Three main libraries are:

  • Main Library – Study Center
  • Main Library – Medicine Careum
  • Main Library – Science

Other Faculties have their own libraries such as the Faculty of Theology, Law, and so on.
